They were promised to be returned to Maori and made accessible to the New Zealand public. A year later the paintings were put in the care of the Kuia Moko Trust, but their present whereabouts are a mystery and Sangl and his daughter Artist Harry Sangl immigrated to New Zealand in 1971 and soon set off in his caravan to the rural Tuhoe Valley to ask kuia – elderly Māori women – if he could paint their portraits. Sangl was met with suspicion but after over four years of building up their trust, 34 kuia agreed. Thirty-four Maori kuia – mothers, grandmothers, older relatives – are illustrated in this book, in colour reproductions from the paintings of Harry Sangl.

In the 1970s, artist Harry Sangl embarked on a journey around Aotearoa to find and paint as many kuia with moko kauae as he could find. Over three and a half years he met 34 women and recorded their moko as well as some recollections of their eventful lives.
