A retreat more than 20 years old at Rockhurst High School, with a rich tradition, the Kairos Retreat is a three day experience of Christian community and sacraments. Kairos translate to “God’s time” and it is here where the student is led to listen to the ways in which God has been working in his life through his loved ones, friends and lived experiences.

Kairos is a three night, four-day, student-led retreat. The team of leaders, comprised of students, members of the Campus Ministry team, and other faculty and staff members, meet six weeks prior, to organize and prepare for their leadership in the upcoming retreat. Every Kairos retreat is fashioned to be as unique as the school that runs it, yet no formal resource has been offered to assist those in high school or college ministry to direct a Kairos retreat. This guide is designed to offer that assistance.

The retreat for 11th graders is called Kairos, and embodies the value of Christian faith as lived and experienced in community. During the three and a half day retreat, juniors are given the opportunity to step away from the hectic pace of everyday life to look within themselves to find their true worth as people in relationship with God, family and friends.

These programs exist in detention facilities as well and should follow the same guidelines. A Kairos connection is like no other, and I would do anything to go back on that retreat. It was a cold weekend in January and midterms had just finished. I was tired and just wanted to sleep quite frankly, but my friends told me that I had to go on a Kairos retreat before I graduated.

Retreats provide important opportunities to pause, reflect, and be refreshed. Kairos Outside is designed to support the families of men and women who are or have been incarcerated in the country's state and federal correctional facilities, as well as county jails and youth offender programs. The Weekend Retreat is a series of talks and activities by women sharing their life journey.
